If you read health articles or watch shows devoted to health, you may have heard that many people are vitamin D deficient. But, what is vitamin D and why does your body need it? In this article, we’re going to take a close look at it and discover what it does for our bodies and whether or not we need a supplement.
Where Does Vitamin D Come From?
Our bodies make vitamin D when we are exposed to sunlight. It can also come from a supplement. Multivitamins contain the vitamin, but you can also buy just vitamin D supplements. Lastly, it can also come from the foods we eat. Foods that are high in it include fatty fish, foods fortified with the vitamin, egg yolks, cheese, and beef liver – just to name a few.
What Does Vitamin D Do for Us?
It is important for our overall health. In order for our bodies to be strong, we need it. It helps our heart, muscles, bones, lungs, and even our brain. It’s also important for being able to fight off infections. In other words, it’s an essential vitamin that we all need in order to live healthy lives.
Why Are So Many People Vitamin D Deficient?
More and more people are spending time indoors. Not only that, but people are also wearing sunscreen anytime they step outdoors. The truth is our bodies need some sunlight. When our bodies don’t get sunlight, we aren’t able to make it. While you can get some it from the foods you eat, it’s a very small amount compared to what your body can make when exposed to the sun. Also, many people don’t realize that it is so important and that the best way to get it is from sunlight. The amount of sunlight exposure you need will depend on the color of your skin.
Do I Need a Supplement?
Whether or not you need a supplement will be based on how much sun you get each day, your diet, and whether or not you have a deficiency. Your doctor will be able to screen you for a deficiency through simple blood work. If your results come back low, your doctor may or may not recommend a supplement. Always, speak to your doctor before beginning new supplements. Too much of it can also be dangerous.
Personally I have to take a prescription strength Vitamin D supplement every day. Living in Northern Norway where we go several months without any sunlight and another few months with limited about of sunlight it is hard to maintain the necessary amounts of Vitamin D that is healthy.
Vitamin D is important for overall health, yet many people are deficient. If you’re worried that you may not be getting enough vitamin D, I encourage you to speak to your doctor.
