Well, it’s the first of the year, and it’s back to school time after a long holiday break. Our kids need daily support to help them focus better at school and home. As a health coach, there are three MUSTS that I tell my clients they need to invest in to see significant results in helping kids focus better at school. What are they?
- Essential Fatty Acids
- Whole Food multi-vitamin
So, why are these so important to our kids? Well, with our hurried world and rush eating, we are getting less and less of these essential nutrients.
Essential Fatty Acids
Essential Fatty Acids cannot be manufactured by our bodies. We must consume them through diet or supplementation. So how much is recommended? Dr. Sears says for optimal behavior and learning a school-age child should consume 12 oz of oily fish weekly, think wild salmon and 500-1000 mg of Omega 3 EPA/DHA fish oil supplement. Brands I love are Barlean’s or Nordic Naturals. Both can be found online or at a natural health food store.
Probiotics – Gut health is a hot topic right now and rightly so.
Here are some facts:
- All disease begins in the gut – Hippocrates
- 80%-90% of our neurotransmitters are made in the gut – that’s why it’s called our second brain.
- The gut also houses 70% of our immune cells.
- It’s imperative to begin your health journey in the gut.
Be sure to look for a probiotic that can withstand the stomach acid as the good bacteria needs to be pass through the stomach and be deposited into the small intestine.
Whole Food Multi-vitamin – we all know that our kids are not getting every nutrient they need from the food they eat. Magnesium and Zinc are two critical components that need to be consumed to help with calming, focus and attention and anxiety. I love Natural Calm. They have a liquid multi-vitamin, or you can get just the magnesium supplement. Check it out here: https://naturalvitality.com/
Of course, cutting out sugar and having a good protein rich breakfast and lunch will go a long way too. I’d love to help you on this journey as we embark on 2018.
