Autumn is my favorite time of year. Warm enough to enjoy outdoor fun before the cold and long winter weather moves in. I love how the trees change colors and all the pops of color that stand out everywhere. Fall is also the best time to get into those projects to prepare for a relaxing winter. Make sure to use this Fall Checklist to make sure you are ready before Winter finally comes!
Things to do in Fall Checklist for Around the Home
Preserve the Harvest
Taking time to preserve the harvest from your garden or even cheap finds at your local farmers market helps provide your family with healthy food over the winter. Pull out the canner and make room in the freezer for a great fall.
Stock the Freezer
If you have a hunter in the family now fall is the perfect time to work on using up leftover meat int he deep freezer from the year before to make room for the next hunting season.
Prep Your Home
Prepare your home for a cold winter by filling in cracks, making repairs around the home and cleaning out those gutters. If you have home improvement projects to keep your home warmer in the winter now is the time to get those done.
Prep Your Garden
Prepare your garden for winter by winterizing your irrigation, mixing in your compost, and other tasks to close your garden down for the year.
Prep Your Pipes
Winterize your water pipes. Shut off main water supplies to outdoor sports, insulate pipes, and wrap any exposed piping in heat tape.
Clean Up All Summer Toys & Accessories
Go for one last bike ride before the weather gets cold than store bikes and other equipment in a dry place for the winter.
Clear out leaves and other places rodents love to hide. While you are at it seal off areas rodents may come into your house seeking winter shelter. Once they get in getting rid of them is a challenge you don’t want to take on.
Prep Your Emergency Kit
Prepare your emergency kit for the cold weather. You will need to add an alternative heat source in case you are without heat, pull out the extra blankets, and call your power company to sign up for protection on your heater if available to allow you the security of knowing repairs are covered should you be without power.
Stock the Pantry
Stock the house with baking essentials so you can enjoy baking for your family and warm your home at the same time.
Rotate Your Closet
Rotate out your cold weather clothing and gear. Do an inventory so you can see what you still need to buy for the new year.
Start Fall Cleaning
While everyone has heard of Spring Cleaning I also like to do a bit of Fall Cleaning around the house as well before I start decorating. It is a great time to take any summer decorations down, dust a little, make things cozy and get ready for Fall & Winter.
Stock Up on Firewood
Here in Norway, we heat the house primarily with our wood burning oven. We get a decent amount of snow each winter so the fall is a good time to load up on wood and have it prepped and ready to go as the temperatures continue to drop. If you have a wood-burning oven or fireplace now is the time to get your wood and have it stacked and prepped and ready to go!
Things to do in Fall for Fun
Go play in the leaves, make a pile and let the kids jump in.
Visit the pumpkin patch and enjoy a hayride. Turn your pumpkins into puree for pumpkin pies.
Go apple picking and make your own apple treats. Canning apple butter for the holidays is a great way to use those apples.
Start your Christmas shopping before the rush and enjoy clearance deals as they make room for holiday stock.
Go on one last camping trip before packing your gear away for the winter. Then get everything clean and dry to pack away so you have no worries next year.
