Wow! Another year has come and gone which means it is time to talk about goals for the new year.
For this year I was at a loss of what we could use for our word of the year, but while I was searching for some motivational quotes I came across this:
“Discover your mind, discover your soul. Learn your heart, learn to grow.”
Instantly I knew what our word for 2018 would be: GROW.
Of course, there are many definitions of the word Grow, but the ones that apply are:
- increase by natural development
- arise or issue as a natural development from an original happening, circumstance, or source
- increase gradually in size, amount, etc.,.; become greater or larger; expand
I have dreams for 2018, and I know that it will be a great year. I have more than just ideas I have some serious goals I am planning on accomplishing this year.
Our goal planning process
After picking our word of the year, it was time to discuss our goals. We don’t go straight to selecting our goals. We make a list of 50-60 things we WANT to accomplish throughout the year. When we create this list, we have no plans to achieve all of these. They are not goals; they are things we WANT. Now, normally some of these become goals but not all. Some of the wants on our list have to deal with the Word of the Year: Grow.
- Learn to Sew
- Learn to Say “No”
These are items we would love to do if we have the time and money.
From this list, we go on to develop our goals. It helps us to narrow down values and ideas before the goal making process.

One of the things I always try to do is to keep my goals SMART.
However, while all of these goals are achievable and realistic, some of them aren’t as specific as they could be. I am working on this and will make adjustments.
Sitting down and planning your goals can be a powerful motivator to think about what you value, where your life is going and where you will be in the future.
Each month I will break up my goals into smaller chunks to make them more manageable. I highly suggest that you do the same.
Also, you need to have a plan on how to accomplish your goals in a manageable and successful way.
So when you sit down to think about your goal for 2018 remember to make them SMART and create a plan.
Happy New Year from our family to yours wishing your 2018 is full of Joy, Family, and Wellness.
