Did you know that many diseases can be linked to poor gut health? Over 2000 years ago, Hippocrates made the statement, “All disease begins in the gut.” Unfortunately, many of us live lifestyles that completely destroy enzymes and other beneficial organisms living in the gut. This leads to a poor immune system and most importantly illness. Let’s take a closer look at how our lifestyle can affect the gut and how the condition the gut can affect our health.
What’s Happening in the Gut
The gut is home to a number of beneficial bacteria and enzymes that help boost the immune system and strengthen intestinal walls. These good bacteria are essential for being able to digest food properly. Unfortunately, antibiotic usage, poor diet, and certain lifestyles can wipe out the good bacteria. When this happens, our immune systems and intestinal walls weaken. Which can lead to a number of illnesses and diseases. Some of the diseases that can occur include autoimmune disorders, arthritis, diabetes, eczema, liver cirrhosis, and even mental illness. As you can see, poor gut health can affect literally every area of the body.
Symptoms to Look For
There are symptoms you can look for that will tell you that you have an unhealthy gut. The most obvious are symptoms associated with the gut, such as gas/bloating, constipation or diarrhea, food allergies, and acid reflux. There are other symptoms you may have never associated with your gut. These include inflammation, skin issues, and throat and nose issues. If you’re having any of these symptoms, working to improve your guts health can make a huge difference.
How to Keep the Gut Healthy
One of the main causes for concern with gut health is the use of antibiotics. When taking antibiotics, you want to make sure you’re using a probiotic to help offset the effects. Antibiotics are not bacteria specific – they kill ALL bacteria, including the good bacteria. A probiotic will add good bacteria to the body. You can take an over-the-counter probiotic (I purchase mine at iHerb. com ) or eat foods that contain live cultures. A few good foods that contain live bacteria cultures include yogurt, kimchi, and sauerkraut. It’s important to note that probiotic use isn’t just to offset antibiotic use. You can take probiotics or eat foods high in good bacteria on a daily basis to keep your gut healthy. Other ways to keep your gut healthy include eating a healthy diet, reducing stress levels, and avoiding alcohol.

Taking the time to improve your gut’s health through probiotic or beneficial bacteria consumption can help ensure your gut can beat diseases.
